Endurance for Eternity

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:7 NIV

While I was on a challenging 10-mile run over the summer, the Lord spoke to my heart and told me to have endurance for eternity. In typical fashion, the Holy Spirit tends to chime in with a short message every now and then, and leaves me to figure out the meaning or context behind it. We can look at the verse from Psalms 119:105 KJV which states “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path…” and understand that many times, the Holy Spirit shows you your next step without revealing God’s entire plan.

When we have our sights set on the things of this world, it is easy to get discouraged by fleshly disappointments. With a carnal mindset, the job offer that never came through causes our hearts to turn bitter. The dream house that slipped through our fingers leads to a broken spirit. The relationship that doesn’t work out turns to ‘no one will ever love me’. If we base our happiness in life by the fulfillment of things directly in front of us, we will often end up confused, hurt and unmotivated. When I start to slip into these kinds of moods, I think of Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his own brothers and waited 13 years until he was exalted to second-in-command in Egypt. Joseph had endurance for eternity. He knew that the situation directly in front of him was not his destiny, and that brought peace to endure even the worst of circumstances.

If you are walking through what looks like hell right now, you can find endurance in the Word of God. Be comforted knowing that you have a Father in Heaven who has you in the palm of his hands, and he will walk with you through every valley you may face. Find that endurance for eternity within yourself. Understand that the world you see around you is not the finished product of your experience. With belief in Jesus there is an eternal oasis waiting to welcome you in with open arms – right now, you are simply in the waiting room of trials and tests to determine your final resting place. And that’s a good thing!

Lace up your shoes, have some water and get back in the race of life. Someone out there needs your love, your joy, and your friendship. They’ll never receive it if you lose your endurance for eternity.
